Bricks and Brownstone was the first—and is still
the only—book to examine the history and diverse architectural
styles of New York townhouses or brownstones. First published
in 1972, and reissued in several subsequent printings, the book
helped pave the way for the brownstone revival that has transformed
large portions of Manhattan and Brooklyn.
With more than 300 color
and black-and-white illustrations, this definitive book studies,
in detail, the Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival,
Italianate, and Second Empire architectural styles of the early and
mid-nineteenth century, as well as the Neo Grec, Romanesque,
Renaissance Revival, and
American Colonial Revival styles of the late nineteenth and early twentieth
centuries.
Bricks and Brownstone also delves into the lifestyles
of the nineteenth-century families who lived in these homes and
discusses the growth and development of the historic, highly
desirable brownstone neighborhoods in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
The new and expanded Rizzoli edition—which is 110 pages
longer than the original book—contains over 60 color photographs
of outstanding townhouse blocks and facades, as well as the interiors
of 10 architecturally distinguished homes in historic neighborhoods
that range from Greenwich Village, the Upper East Side, and the
Upper West Side, to Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope. The new
Rizzoli edition also includes 14 “Best of the Brownstones” Walking
Tours in which the author leads readers to his favorite neighborhoods
and row houses, and discusses their history and significance.
